I am trying to understand how SolFS free disk space reporting works, and how to use it most effectively for my requirements.

I am thinking of SolFS free space in terms of a VMware dynamically expanding disk. Even though you can create a VMware virtual disk on a very small drive, you can still define the virtual disk as having a lot of free space - certainly more than what the host file system can accommodate.

This is very useful, because then when you copy this VM to another machine that really does have a lot more free space, it just works - instantly! Or, you could free up more space on your host operating system later, and again, you would not have to worry at all about growing the virtual machine's virtual disk size through a lengthy operation.

How can I get closest to this behavior with SolFS?

You can preallocate space for a resizable disk. What you can't do is report something that doesn't exist in reality.

To add - resizable disks don't have an upper limit (unlike VMWare images) so your question is just not applicable.
