TElXMLSigner generates signature directly on the xml file or first converted to a string of bytes?
Or before signing an XML file, I must first convert this to a string of bytes?

The XML stream (if you have one) is loaded into DOM structure, processed according to the requirements (usually at least one of canonicalization procedures is performed), then signed and serialized back. It's not possible to sign the XML without parsing it, as processing is required.
