http://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc6187 defines the ways to directly and natively support X.509 as an authentication mechanism in SSH.

Especially section 3.4 of RFC 6187 would be of interest to us, so we would be able to use "x509v3-ecdsa-sha2-*" key formats.

So far the demand is next to zero. So if we implement it, this would be only if someone sponsored it.
