We are having a problem sending commands to an FTP server using the ElSimpleFTPSClient class. Specifically it fails with the SendCmd method. It does not seem to be supporting the FTP "ls" command to list the contents of a directory. It gives a Command not understood error (error code 500). We are connecting to a standard FTP server with no SSL for our tests.

FTP protocol is not designed for sending custom commands so it's no wonder that you get Command not understood.
