What this client should do? Telnet is "raw" access to the remote server via TCP socket. So you can just use TElSocket and that would be it.

If you are asking about translating escape sequences, then they are applicable only to visual representation of the received data, and don't make sense for non-visual client.

In my case, customers are interested in connecting to older systems using Telnet - and automate execution of commands and return result.

But I do wonder about authentication. Is there any standard authentication model for setting a username or password or is that up to how the telnet server presents username and password? Basically, I want the authentication part work like in FTP, that I specify username password in client component, but maybe this will never work because lack of standard?

Telnet is just "plain" socket access. When you connect to port 23, there's a shell (similar to SSH shell) running there that asks you for credentials. However, login is not part of the protocol -- when one needs login and security during shell access, they use SSH.
