We would like to be able to observe the activity of the filter for times when we need to troubleshoot issues, preferably by using DbgView. Is there a way how the filter can log to DbgView 'out-of-the-box' (or using some other method), and avoid adding the DbgPrint calls manually ourselves?

You should add a debug strings to the all entries you need to observe. But you may enable or disable some of the messages, by adding a flags, that will enable the selected debug level. There is a macros CBFLT_LOG_PRINT located in headers, that demonstrates that technique.
