These functions say they "filter by extended attribute name." I'm trying to interpret what this means.

It seems that what you would like to do is filter by some extended attribute having some particular value. Is the purpose of these functions to filter by the mere presence of a specific extended attribute and then the callback function would have to decide if the value matches what you are looking for?

This of course diminishes the usefulness of passthrough filters if you can't say you only want to bypass files that have a certain attribute equaling a particular value.

Yes, exactly. Having most of the logic in user mode provides flexibility impossible in the kernel mode.
