The miscellaneous CBFS callbacks (Create file, write file, etc.) generally act as a link between a physical directory and the files within it and a virtual mounted directory. For each file that exists in the virtual directory, a physical file exists elsewhere on the machine.

My question is, is it possible to create or enumerate virtual files and interact with them without physically creating them on the physical disk? Is this recommended?

I am sorry, but no, they don't. The callbacks ask your code to handle the request. It's up to you what to do in that callbacks -- you can generate this information on the fly, take it from the cloud etc. .
