What could be the reason that some of our customers do not see the default network drive icon for a mount? They instead see a white sheet. Note that this does not affect the functionality. Everything works fine. We do not have any code to replace the default icon.

You should check, as a first step, that mount notifier helper dll is installed and running correctly. It is easy to find using Process Explorer tool from http://technet.microsoft.com/sysinternals . If you find CbFsMntNtf6.dll in the list of loaded modules under the explorer.exe process, that it is installed and running. Otherwise, it may be anti-virus software that prevents installation of helper dll. I should note also, that system restart or logoff/logon may be required in order to load custom icon overlay properly.
