I note that the documentation says the following:

Main icon size Overlay size
16x16 10x10
32x32 16x16
48x48 24x24
256x256 128x128

Should I create my icons in the "Overlay size" (i.e. 10x10, 16x16, 24x24, 128x124) or should I create them in the "Main icon size" and allow the system to scale them down.

I have tried creating various versions but the system appears to be selecting an image that is too big and scaling it down in preference to using an image at its native size - that just makes it look bad.

Could you explain the logic that the system uses for selecting a particular sized image from the icon? Thanks.

You need to create icons of overlay size. The icon should be one object of different sizes, not multiple icon objects.
