Is it possible to place the physical storage on a network share (e.g. a NAS) or does it have to be a local drive/directory?

We are using version 2.5.51.14 of CBFS.

It's up to you - Callback File System (in opposite to Solid File System product) doesn't maintain any storage itself. It's your code that reads and writes data to/from backend storage. You can use network and DB drivers in your callbacks, this is safe from CBFS point of view.
